How to Research the Best Hashtags

Hashtags have been with us since their launch 8 years ago on Twitter. One of the reasons why we developed the TweetThis Shortcode plugin was to increase our visibility on Twitter. A key feature of that was the ability to add hashtags within the shortcode. Why? Simply put, many people research Twitter on an ongoing basis based on the hashtags shared. Just as keywords are critical to search, hashtags are critical to searches in social media.

One of our most popular posts is our list of hashtag research tools available on the web. But how does a marketer utilize one of those tools to identify the best hashtags possible to increase their social media update’s visibility.

The reason why hashtags are so popular is because they allow your post to be seen by a wider audience who might not already be connected with you. It’s important to understand they were created as a service, as a way to shorten the process when it comes to finding more posts about topics you’re interested in. Kelsey Jones, Salesforce Canada

This example from Salesforce utilizes several tools.

  • On Tagboard, the recommendation is to review statistics, sentiment and related hashtags across multiple social media platforms. Your goal should be to identify the most popular that’s highly relevant to the topic of the social media update or article you’re referring to.
  • On Twitter, you can utilize the extensive search functionality. Search a term in the search box and you have the ability to narrow down the results through several tabs – top (photos and tweets), live, accounts, photos, and videos. You can filter the search across Twitter or just within your own network. You can even just search around you geographically.
  • On Instagram, you just need to type the hashtag and Instagram will instantly recommend trending tags along with their post counts. Add the hashtags that are all relevant and have a solid count.

While Twitter limits your overall characters shared in your update, including hashtags, Instagram allows you to share up to 11 hashtags for each and every image or video shared  Tweet This!!

Here’s my tip… be consistent! Imagine a user that’s researching a hashtag that you write about along with dozens of other social media accounts. Now, imagine a user that’s researching a hashtag and frequently discovering new content and updates produced by you. Which one do you think provides you a better opportunity to get followed, build awareness, engage with the account, or ultimately to do business with.

  1. Thanks for the information, Douglas. I’d like to add my experience with usage of hashtag.
    – Instagram. Disappointed as people use them for spam and inappropriate content. For example #sea shows me only 4 images related to sea and others to any other things but not sea.
    – Twitter. Situation is better, but still not very good. All I want to say is that valusble material with appropriate hashtags very offer lost in noise. So to attract attention to it you need to use something other, like great picture or mention people in description
