Splog Your Way to a Higher Technorati Rank?
Houston, we have a problem.
A splog got a hold of me today when I mentioned “Search Engine Optimization” in my last blog entry. In case you’ve never heard of Splogging, it’s Spam Blogging… that is, these jerks put up thousands of sites that lift your content so that they rank nicely in Search Engines. By ranking nicely, they are able to capitalize on Ad Dollars from folks clicking through.
This site ’splogged’ me, but it increased my ranking in Technorati because Technorati ranks based on how many links to your blog there are out there on other blogs. So… you mean I can simply increase my ranking on Technorati by putting bogus content in that gets me ’splogged’? You sure can!
Hopefully, Technorati takes steps to solve this… otherwise it will be abused by folks that are looking to increase their ranking. You know how they’ll do it? They’ll put top terms in their blog like SEO, Search Engine Optimization, Email Marketing, Internet Marketing, Web 2.0, Ajax, Spam, Google, Google Adsense, Google Adwords, Google Search, Ask.com, MP3, File Sharing, Apple, OSX, Windows XP, Microsoft, Get rich quick, Top 10, Cash, Make Money, Investments, Top Investments… you get the point 
Fix it, Technorati!
As for splogging, for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. In comes Splog Reporter:
Please report your splogs there, and ask Technorati to utilize a service like this to correct their ranking.
