Preparing for a Speech

RainmakersLast night I had the pleasure of meeting with Ellen Dunnigan and Rachel Mahl from Accent on Business, a firm that coaches speakers nationwide.

The team graciously took the time out to provide me with some warm-up and preparation steps that I’m putting to use for tonight’s Indianapolis Techmakers launch and from now on!

Ellen has a great article on stage fright, too. Be sure to read it – it’s just a small piece of the information that Accent on Business provided me last night. I was also surprised to find out that Ellen does 1-time coaching sessions with a lot of folks. If you’ve got a speech coming up that you’d really like to hit a homerun on, I’d highly recommend her firm.

I’ve had some events where nervousness slowly creeped in during the speech. We walked through some of those and Ellen provided some super tips on prevention as well as how to quell those butterflies mid-speech.

This event is a little bit different. Since I’m going to know some or most of the crowd, I’ve put together a wacky (but educational) skit that’s going to enlist the help of Doug Theis and Lorraine Ball. Doug is the leading the Indianapolis Techmakers and Lorraine is a long-time Rainmaker.

Both have become great friends and supporters over the last year. Hope to see you tonight!
