Boxed software faces uncertain future

In this era of high-speed Internet access, it's often easier to click a mouse and download a piece of software straight to the computer desktop, or fire up a Web browser and access a program as an online service.

McDonalds is launching their own virtual world

McDonald's is apparently in the process of soft-launching a virtual world to take over HappyMeal.com. It's not clear how old the world is, but the contest is still open for kids to pick the virtual world's name.

SaaS is being used, and there are definite challenges. See http://tinyurl.com/62aocx for Ben Tomkins blog post which cites SaaS outages at Amazon, Citrix and Google. However, this is the direction software is taking. You could even argue it's 'greener' due to the lack of petrochemical-based packaging. With timely updates transparent to the users via SaaS, boxed SW will soon be the past.
