links for 2007-12-27

  • The five IBM predictions are nothing earth shaking. Anyone with minimal technology knowhow would expect these results.
I really like the link about blogging and small businesses. The challenge for small businesses is finding the time to dedicate to blogging while running a business start up.
    Thanks for the post.
  • I agree with you on both opinions, SBM. I would add, though, that blogging-time should be seen just as any other time a small business has to commit to marketing. It's tough to find any time - but you have to if you want it to work!

The commitment with blogging is a little more stringent, though. Momentum and consistency are both required. If you drop off, so will your traffic!
  • Wow, I must say based on your blog its alittle overwelming to see the fast movement that technology is happening. I try to keep up as much as possible, but i must say it's difficult. I do enjoy reading your blog and must say keep it up , it share a great deal of information I would not normally get. Keep rocking
  • I really don't understand this outrage at the Google Shared Items. When you have to actively hit a button to share it to your public page. There are so many other options within Google Reader to send articles to specific people if you want to keep the private.

I think what we are seeing is that the average users are finally begin to see that we were never really anonymous online to begin with, but now with Facebook Beacon and now Google Shared Items its becoming too apparent for them as these tools hit really close to home.
  • Hi Justin,

One rule of user experience in software is that people will utilize your application in ways you never imagined. In the case of Google's shared items, many people were utilizing this as a 'flag' but not actually using it to literally share the items.

Since the initial feature did not push the content to their friends, it was quite a shock when it occurred. Imagine if you had programmatically set up a page or site where you pushed 'shared' items - but you only shared news about e.g. a political Party.

Your intent was never to share your political beliefs, and perhaps you weren't even a member of that party... but now all of your friends see stories highlighted on this political party.

At one time, I was using Google's 'shared' links to publish items to my blog. I stopped because I find del.icio.us much better. Either way... these weren't links for my friends... they were for my readers! Del.icio.us deals with this gracefully, having the opportunity to both push links to friends AND not publish the links.

It was just shortsighted on their part - and a little surprising coming from such a giant. Perception is reality... the fact that so many are upset (I'm not) is an indication that there was a mistake made.
