Don Imus

I used Witty Comics and wrote this out of frustration of watching the normal group of idiots who always come to these peoples’ defense by crying double standard. Don Imus is paid a lot of money for using his mouth and his brain. He failed with both – fire him.

Thanks, foo. That fire really did take off, didn’t it? Wow! I’m hoping that it’s over. Someone told me once that even bad press is good press, I’m not so sure.

The stats on my blog were out the ceiling… as well as the affiliate dollars. I suppose someone could take something like that and run with it, but I don’t want to be known as that type of blogger.

A lot of companies have realized that bad publicity, law suits and all, are just a cost of doing business. And while at first it may have seemed like a bad move to set Imus up for a soft landing back into the radio biz the cost of this Public Relations debacle is all recoupable because eventually this story will fade away and advertisers will be ready for a fresh new boost of controversy to drive up interest. Sad but true.

Hmm… I just got an e-mail starting with:

Dear Martin,
The controversy over Don Imus’ racist remarks goes far beyond one bigoted commentator. But getting rid of Imus won’t fix the media problem.

a) The previous comment was the only time I ever wrote anything about this Don Imus guy (I’ve never heard of him before, i guess that he must be an US phenomenom)
b) This must sort of mean that they must have gotten my e-mail address from my previous comment.
c) How did they manage that – did they really go through all the trouble of going to my blog, and then checking the registry database? That sounds like non-automated work, in which case they should have realized that I didn’t even comment on the Imus guy. [Or is there a security flaw in Wordpress that allows outsiders mining e-mail addresses?]
d) Did anyone else get that e-mail, or have your heard of the Free Press (www dot freepress dot com)?
e) Before I couldn’t care less about the Imus guy, but this campaign of spam mail certainly tips me in the direction that the campaign didn’t want to. Spam does not work to influence people.

I’ve gotten email from them as well. The only thing I can think is that they use their readers to collect and submit email addresses. I don’t have my address posted on my site anywhere – so I’m not sure how they would have gotten it unless through another person registering me. Unfortunately, I’m not as careful with my email address as I should be.

It’s doubtful there is some kind of security flaw in WordPress. That is one hole that would have been reported (and used) as soon as it would occur.

I’m not usually very controversial, Latimer – but looks like it’s my week! This particular situation with Imus really gets to me, though. I can’t believe a) people are supporting him and b) that they are justifying the behavior based on rap music or other racial remarks made by minorities.

People need to face up to the fact that we are different, that there are advantages provided from one’s race, and that some behaviors should be tolerated and accepted in some cases and not others. Double standard? Of course there is! And there should be.

People need to be held accountable personally for their actions. Imus is a mean ol’ jerk that has insulted many races and religions. It’s not a tough job.. he talks on the radio and is paid millions. He deserves to retire and never be heard from again.

If the media and society would quit trying to make race invisible and, instead, celebrate the incredible diversity of this country and the differences between us, I think we would be so much better off.

Hi jr,

My point is that we NEED a double standard. Double standards are always talked about in a negative light but they are found everywhere and, often, they are not a negative. Physicals for men and women, treatment of handicapped, first class & coach… double standards are part of everyday life.

If we accept that we are different instead of trying to make everyone ‘colorless’, we can grow to appreciate our differences. I think it’s perfectly okay for minorities to have slang and words that we should not speak. Why can’t they? It’s not up to me to police their language – that’s up to themselves.

As well, they did not target specific women as Imus did.

I’m glad you asked the question! It needs to be talked about more.

Imus *is* a “mean ol’ jerk”. He’s always been a shock jock; if people don’t want to hear what he’s saying, they shouldn’t listen.

What I find interesting is that Imus is led into a derogatory comment by his producer, then apologizes and says he’s a good person; as if that makes it all okay.
You had no one lead you into a derogatory comment – thought of that one all by yourself – you don’t apologize, and say you’re a good person; as if that makes it all okay.

You both seriously hurt someone else’s feelings. Imus apologized, you refuse.

Yet you’re banging the “fire Imus” drum.
Where’s the “fire Doug” drum?
To add to your line of thinking, where’s the “fire Bernard” drum? He stated the now-infamous “ho” line before Imus did. Do you only go after the most prominent fish, and it’s okay to be a smaller fish calling women hos, or do you just jump on bandwagons to generate hype for your blog?

Double standard, indeed. More like quadruple standard.

There’s a difference between constructive criticism and making a racial slur. I’m astounded that you would even try to relate the two.

I’ve never heard of the “Bernard” incident, but if he’s white, in the public eye, and said the same thing, I would support his termination as well!

As for “fire Doug”, that’s the great thing about the Internet! You can stop coming to my blog any time you like. I hope you don’t do that, though. While some don’t appreciate dissension, I actually do. You’ll notice while I moderate comments, I do approve them.

Doug, I have converted through reading so many blogs. I did not think Imus should be fired but be suspended for a year and fined 500,000. being vindictive, I would say fire him like this,
“Fire his nappy head ugly flat ass!”

I loved your comment on your blog, I hope they meet with Imus with their fathers so that Imus can explain what he called their daughters.
